Bill Peterson is one of the winningest Varsity Boys Basketball coaches in San Diego county history, finishing his career with 404 wins. Coming to Kearny in 1981, he added 211 wins to his total during his 12 years at Kearny. He also had successful tenures as head basketball coach at Lincoln from 1966-1975 and at St. Augustine in 1993-94. Two-time county Coach of the Year, Coach “Pete” guided his teams to ten league championships and three CIF finals appearances. He retired after the 1993-94 school year. After retirement he continued to support Kearny b-ball by volunteering to do a variety of game-day tasks, including running the scoreboard. Once a Komet, always a Komet!
