Kearny Historical Archives
KHS News and the Galaxy
April 2021
When they were published the school’s newspapers, KHS News and later the Galaxy, served the Kearny student population by sharing information about school events, important issues, and the achievements of their classmates. Today those publications serve to document the history of Kearny High School.
The Kearny Historical Archives is fortunate to have in its collection copies of the KHS News and the Galaxy thanks to the donations from alumni and staff. Jinx Palma Dickey (℅ ’62) donated her copies of the KHS News from the early 1960’s. Steve Grooms (c/o ’75) collected and donated issues of the Galaxy from the 1970’s. An unidentified donor from La Jolla sent the school copies of the KHS News from the years 1966-1968. Grace Delao (℅ ’75) donated copies of the Galaxy and her production notes as part of the Galaxy staff. Additional copies have come from the collections of Kearny memorabilia donated to the school by the families of Coach Slater and Coach Kohr.
Many of these KHS News and Galaxies have been digitized and are now available to be viewed in the online museum on the Alumni website. When conditions allow, the rest of the donated newspapers will be scanned and added to the website.

The items in the Kearny High Historical Archives provide alumni with the opportunity to reminisce, reflect, and enjoy. They also provide current students with a sense of identity and connection with something that has value with the many students who experienced Kearny before them – being a Komet.
If you have Kearny related memorabilia, of any kind, please consider donating it to the school’s Historical Archives. You can send it to the school, drop it off in the Main Office, or connect with me at rcorlett.khs.archives@gmail.com to arrange for a transfer.
